Fancy A Go At Match Fishing?

Post by Martin on Sun Oct 11, 2009 8:01 am

At NT&GC we have decided to start the 'Ave A Go League for anglers that want to do a bit of competitive fishing without the high costs associated with today's modern match scene. The best way to improve your coarse fishing is to fish with other anglers and to fish competitively as this focuses your attention on both your fishing and others around you. The 'Ave A Go League is designed to be affordable, competitive but in a very friendly way and open and affordable to all anglers.

The format is simple, we have one match per month at our home water, Well Barn Pond and one match at a commercial fishery. We start early and finish early with the winter matches being just four hours
long with the drawer at 08:15 and put in at 09:00 finishing at 13:00. Standard match points apply, 1 point for the winner, 2 for second place (you get the idea) but on the day the winner wins the right to draw for that weeks prize, they DO NOT win any money! If the winner does not drawer the prize then second place has a drawer, then third place until the prize is won. The league is designed to give everyone a chance at coming away with something, probably a voucher for Sunday Lunch for two people! There will be tackle prizes for the first, second and third positions in the league to make it interesting
for those that want to win!

To enter the Newton Tackle & Gun Centre 'Ave A Go League you need to be a member of the club at a cost of £35 per annum (October to September and you can fish Well Barn Pond whenever you like) and the match fee is £2 (yes two quid). Obviously on an away water the day ticket is payable plus your £2 and obviously you can stay on anywhere after the match.

Our Simple Rules

  • Barbless hooks only
  • Approved fishery keepnets only, minimum length 2.5m (3m preferred and two may be required at Goodiford Mill)
  • Two Kilo bait restriction with the exception of Goodiford Mill which is five kilo's (1 pint maggots = 350g)
  • Thirteen meter maximum for poles
  • No joker or bloodworm
  • There will be two sections fished to make the league competitive
  • Any carp caught is only worth 2lb and must be recorded by the match secretary and released
  • Any fish hooked but not landed before the whistle must be landed within ten minutes of the whistle being blown
  • All anglers must enjoy themselves and have a laugh whilst fishing one of our matches

i like the sound of this apart from the 2lb carp thing as on many commercial waters it's your choice whether to go for the silvers or carp and the ammount of time taken to land a good carp will be more than the ammount of silvers in that time.
other than that, when will it start and what day will it be held on?

The first match is to be held at Well Barn Pond on Sunday 25th October. Can all those that are in let me know ASAP please.

We can certainly find out the interest level in a Sea Fishing Match league, any suggestions on rules Kev? I'll put up a post in the sea fishing section.

Well we fished today, Sunday, seven people came to the lake but not all for the match so we just fished the lake for around five hours. We all had quite a few roach and skimmers, one even needed a landing net! Yes there are a few small fish in there but they gave us some good sport on a windy autumn day which I guess is probably more than a few other lakes did today.

The first of the winter matches will be on Sunday 8th November, please sign in at the shop by Wednesday 4th so that we can get the numbers right.
