Foul hooked PB

Post by Unholymoondog on Sat Apr 12, 2008 7:58 pm

You have just caught the fish of your dreams, or broken your PB, but it is hooked in the tail, fin, or somewhere other than the mouth.

The question is, would you claim it as a new PB ? Is it right to claim a foul hooked fish as a PB ? Or could you not sleep at night knowing it was foul hooked ?

yep i'm with zulu on this one, if you have caught a lump be it foul hooked or not it proves that fish has been around your bait & as already stated the fight can be fantastic

imo as long as you realise early enough that the fish is foul hooked & don't give it to much grief then you deserve the catch

Interesting topic this one and normally i say a fish on the bank is a fish on the bank BUT I'm not sure I'd class this one as my PB. A fish caught yes but a PB Question

I voted "No" I would have ethical problems claiming a foul hooked fish as a PB. Fortunately I have not encountered the issue and I hope I don't as I would feel a bit gutted.

At the end of the day the hook is still in the fish, which means it has to have been somewhere near your bait. If it made a bite indication, for example, the float going under or a screaming take, it could also indicate that the fish was about your end tackle. But ethically, it's hard to decide as it's been hooked, fair play, but not in the mouth! I see the issue with this one lol

I voted yes because of the same reason zulu said, you still have to use your skills to bring the fish to your net by keeping it out of snags and off the floor. king

So i would count it as my PB

Many moons ago I was fishing with my friend on wheel pond when wheel pond was wild! You know the days where every session you would see the big wily 20lbish carp and its ghost and mirror carp companions cruise past on the far bank and you would cast your maggots in their general direction but they knew your game! And when the tench averaged about 4oz each (alistairs dream! hahaha!) and when there were 2 or 3 big big golden orfe in the pond which you always saw! Well one day my friend struck into something a bit bigger than the usual 2oz perch which was all we could ever seem to catch and it turned out to be one of those big orfe! When he got it into the net it spat the maggots out! He didnt even hook it it just clung to those 2 white and red maggots for dear life! We weighed it using my highly acurate 2.99 trago mills scales and without the net it was 6lb 2oz! Now I was jumping up and down with excitement 'you lucky bugger you have a new newton record there lets go and get some witnesses and some better scales to check!'. He looked back at me rather sadly and said to me 'No I didnt, I didnt hook it' and gently returned the giant carrot back to the water. I guess what he was saying was right, but I still think he's a fool as he would still have his name in the record book now! Mind you though he did turn out to be a gay transvestite so that may explain a few things!
